In our first birding trip to Singanallur lake, an experienced bird watcher in the group showed us the courtship of a Grey-headed Swamphen, a water bird with extremely long toes evolved to walk on the aquatic plants floating on the surface of water. We saw a male bird holding a water hyacinth flower in its beak. It ran towards a female, gently bowed, made loud chuckles and offered the flower to the female.
We couldn’t believe our eyes. The female accepted the flower and they walked away together. We were filled with joy witnessing this behaviour of the birds.
