Introduction to Birding

An order of transfer to Tirunelveli landed me in the Central Excise Office premises whose grounds included the Staff Quarters. I occupied the Quarters around July 2017 just when the GST law in the Country was rolled out. New environment kept me in a state of awareness. The first night I spent in the said Quarters which I vividly remember. The morning or pre-dawn hundreds of birds in the surrounding woke me up by 3.30 AM with their cacophony. I have heard such calls only in the VOC Park at Coimbatore. I felt like being in that Park at the early hour. Gradually I got used to the calls of birds most of which I later learnt to be House Crows and Common Mynas. My office was about 40 meters away from my home and during the short walk one cannot miss the noisy babblers. The Asian Koels were always heard all through the day. The 'Last'ing Look

It was an usual early morning birding walk. I saw this beautiful male Greater Painted Snipe foraging in the shallow waters of Vellode Bird Sanctuary in Erode. I was surprised to see this incredibly shy and cautious bird, out in the open waters. I crept along the ground and moved towards him with utmost caution. I did not want him to take flight at the sight of me. Just as he went behind that small bund in the photo, I immediately took the opportunity to get real close to him as his sight was obstructed by the bund. Lying down, I waited patiently for him to come to the open from behind the bund. After a few minutes he returned to the open area and it was his time to get surprised. He looked at me with those gorgeous eyes. He raised his neck, tucked it back in and was looking at me measuring his safety. Coimbatore | Tamilnadu | India | 03 NOV 2020 கார்மேகம் கட்டிக்கொண்டும் முட்டிக்கொண்டும் கண்ணைக் கசக்கிப் பிழிந்து, தூற்றிக் கொண்டு இருந்த கார்த்திகையின் மதிய வேளையில், என் வீட்டின் வெளியே சிட்டுக்குருவிகளின் சிணுங்கல் கேட்டது, தாயும் சேயுமாய் மழையில் ஊறிக்கிடந்த அரிசி, சோளக்குருணைகளை கொத்திக்கொண்டும், சண்டையிட்டுக்கொண்டும் அளவளாவித் திரிந்தன சிட்டுக்குருவிகள், சற்று தூரத்தில் ஒரு குருவி மட்டும் வெள்ளை வெளேரென்று "வெள்ளை அழகி " போல் தெரிய, முதலில் வேதிவால் குருவி தான் என்னைப்பார்க்க வந்து விட்டதோ என எண்ணினேன், ஆனாலும் வால் நீளம் குறைவாய் இருந்ததால், அதன் பெயரும் இனமும் தெரியவில்லை , உடனே என் புகைப்படக்கருவியில் அவளை படம் பிடித்து CNS மற்றும் முகநூல் அணியின் குருவிக்காரர்களிடம் பெயர் விவரங்கள் கேட்டேன், இதுவும் சிட்டுக்குருவியின் இனம் என்றும், மனிதனுக்கு சருமம் வெள்ளைப்படுதல் நோய் (வெண் குஷ்டம் )போல் இதுவும் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு இருக்கிறதென்றும், இதை பார்ப்பது அரிது என்றும் குருவிக்காரர்கள் மற்றும் கூகுள் மூலமும் தெரிந்து கொண்டேன், நேரில் பார்த்தவர்கள் வரிசையில் நானும் சேர்ந்து கொண...
