Lockdown Birding

Members of Coimbatore Nature Society continue to observe birds even during the COVID-19 lockdown. While it was once in a week birding trip before lockdown during every Sundays, it is now every day. But the difference is birding is now done from their house and terrace.

The bird calls are now clearly heard than before in the absence of vehicular movement and reduction in noise pollution. Birds like Parrots (Rose-ringed Parakeets), Mynas, Crows, Koels, Sunbirds, Tailorbirds are more clearly heard and seen.

Members, however, feel that there is no great change with respect to species population or new species getting sighted or missing of any species, except a few cases wherein some regular birds gone missing, but some other common birds are getting sighted. It is business, as usual for the birds. However, birds are seen coming to the roads often and freely and some water birds are making frequent flying visits to the waterbodies. There may be some impact for scavenger birds like Black Kite and Crows, since hotels and restaurants and meat shops are mostly shut. But since everyone is locked down, their movement impact is not known or not clear.

This observation is not only from core city area, but also from city surroundings like Sulur, Puliampatti, Ganapathi, etc.
